I store these PDFs in Google Drive, however, because these files are password-protected, are not searchable within the text drive. Also, each PDF file has a different password, so it is impossible to remember and later it takes a lot to find these PDFs.

How to Remove Password from PDF files

Since Google Drive is already protected from 2 layers of security – password and 2-factor authentication – it should be fine if we remove password protection from PDF files before uploading to Drive.

Is there any software program available that can remove password protection from PDF files? One that does a dime on both Mac and Windows and does not work? Well the answer is yes and it is already installed on your computer. It is called Google Chrome.

Google Chrome has a built-in PDF reader * and a PDF author and we can add both features to remove passwords from any PDF document. Let’s see how:

  1. Drag any password protected PDF file into your Google Chrome browser. If you are not able to find one, then use this sample PDF file – the open password is “labnol” without quotes.
  2. Google Chrome will now prompt you to enter the file’s password. Enter the password to open the file and press Enter.
  3. Now go to File menu in Google Chrome and select Print (or press Ctrl + P on Windows or Press CMD + P on Mac). Select the destination printer as “Save as PDF” and click on the Save button.

Google Chrome will now save PDFs to your desktop but without password protection. If you open this PDF in Chrome again, then password will not be required to open it now. Thank you Ivan for the tip.

Alternatively, if you have Google Cloud Print enabled, you can choose the destination as “Save to Google Drive” in the print dialog and the insecure version of PDF will be sent directly from Chrome to your Google Drive.

Remove PDF Password Without Chrome

If you are not a Google Chrome user, download this free Windows utility, which is called PCPDFMATEdit, to remove the password from PDF files.

First launch the program and it will ask you for the location of the PDF file. Before selecting and opening PDFs, change the mode to “Full Revival”, then switch to the Security tab and set the “Security System” to “Any Encryption”. Click on the save button and your pdf will no longer need to open the password.
